TED:
the stage, the dinners, and two talks

What TED was in this story. The conference that gathered the population Brockman convened privately — Nobel laureates, technology founders, and the money that funded both.

Brockman kept making introductions after the conviction, and asked Epstein to send his private plane to collect a New York Times columnist for the event.

No document establishes that TED received Epstein money, or that TED knew who was funding the dinners held during its conference.

And the speakers. Thousands of people spoke at or attended TED across these years. Appearing on that stage establishes nothing about anyone.

Two Gates talks are on this page because they are the most widely circulated statements he has made about pandemics and about population — and because both are routinely quoted in fragments. Both appear here in context, with the full transcripts linked.

This is the most-quoted sentence of Gates’s public life, and it is worth setting out in full rather than in fragments — in either direction.

The setting. “Innovating to Zero!” is a talk about eliminating carbon emissions. Gates presents emissions as a product of four terms and argues that driving the total to zero requires driving a term to zero.

The passage, complete:

“First, we’ve got population. The world today has 6.8 billion people. That’s headed up to about nine billion. Now, if we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower that by, perhaps, 10 or 15 percent. But there, we see an increase of about 1.3.”

The two readings.

One — that “that” refers to the projected rise toward nine billion, and the mechanism is the demographic transition: falling child mortality leads families to have fewer children, so growth slows. This is the reading Gates has given, and the one Reuters, FactCheck.org, Snopes, Africa Check and Lead Stories reached on examining the full talk.

Two — that a man describing vaccines as something that lowers a population figure, in a talk about reducing a variable to zero, has said something that warrants scrutiny regardless of the mechanism he intended.

What is not in dispute: the words, the setting, and that the same talk ends with Gates choosing cheap zero-carbon power over a new vaccine when offered one wish.

What remains legitimately contested is whether population belongs in a climate equation at all, and whether large foundations should shape reproductive health provision in poorer countries. Those are real arguments and this site does not settle them.

Five years before COVID-19, Gates described what a pandemic would do and what the world lacked.

The diagnosis. On Ebola: “the problem wasn’t that there was a system that didn’t work well enough. The problem was that we didn’t have a system at all.” No epidemiologists ready to deploy, case reports arriving on paper, delayed and inaccurate.

The comparison he drew:

“We have invested a huge amount in nuclear deterrence, but we’ve actually invested very little in a system to stop an epidemic.”

The prescriptions. Strong health systems in poor countries. A standing medical reserve corps. Pairing medical personnel with the military, for logistics and securing areas. “Germ games, not war games” — noting the last US exercise was in 2001 and “it didn’t go so well. So far the score is germs one, people zero.” And advanced R&D in vaccines and diagnostics.

A documented adjacency, stated without inference. Ten months before this talk, in June 2014, Gates was granted a Department of Energy “Q” access authorisation — the clearance that governs nuclear weapons Restricted Data. He held it until December 2021.

The DOE letter confirming it does not state why it was granted, and does not name the agency that vetted him first. No document connects the clearance to this talk, to pandemic preparedness, or to any biological programme — and none rules it out.

Both facts are on the record. A man arguing publicly that nuclear deterrence was over-funded relative to epidemic preparedness held, at that moment, the government’s highest nuclear clearance.

The 2002 flight is the one hard fact in this section.

Slate’s reporting states that Dawkins, Dennett and Pinker flew to a TED conference on Epstein’s private jet in 2002, with Brockman aboard. The Edge.org photograph captioned “Flying to the TED Conference” shows that group.

Pinker’s account is that he boarded only because of Brockman. Roger Schank told Slate the same thing about how he met Epstein: “Everybody goes through John Brockman.”

And the money is now quantified. The Miami Herald’s analysis of public filings from three Epstein charities found the Edge Foundation received at least $455,000 between 1998 and 2005 — the first concrete figure attached to a relationship previously described only in general terms.

That is a floor, not a total. It covers three entities and ends in 2005, three years before the conviction — and Brockman’s own filings show Epstein funding the dinners for years afterward.
