The distinction that governs this report.
Modi appears in the files as the subject of other men’s claims. He is not a correspondent. No document shows contact between him and Epstein. The most inflammatory line about him is Epstein boasting to a third party.
Anil Ambani appears as a participant. He corresponded directly, repeatedly, over roughly two years, nine years after Epstein’s conviction was public.
Conflating those two is the failure that has dominated Indian coverage in both directions — by those treating an Epstein boast as evidence about the prime minister, and by those using the boast’s weakness to dismiss the Ambani correspondence entirely.
The structural finding. This is the same pattern documented in Australia and China: a well-connected private individual positioning themselves as a conduit to power, whose value to Epstein depended entirely on the claim being believed rather than on it being true.
And the same unresolved question. The News Minute put it precisely: Ambani positioned himself as a backchannel, and there is no record he had any official clearance to do so.
Narendra Modi — named in emails written by Epstein to other people. No documented contact. No evidence of any substantive interaction or advisory relationship. The government calls the claims baseless.
Anil Ambani — a direct correspondent across 2017–2019, whose own messages invoke “Leadership” in Delhi and request specific introductions in Washington.
One is a claim about a man. The other is a documented record of what that man’s reported associate actually did.
Australia — a former prime minister’s daughter arranging meetings and reputational favours, saying openly she sought career access.
China — a German businessman pitching deals and awaiting Epstein’s authorisation.
India — a billionaire industrialist described by Epstein as “Modi’s man.”

Section 01
Anil Ambani
Who he is. Chairman of the Reliance Group and brother of Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man. Both are reported to be close to Prime Minister Modi. Anil Ambani was the officially recommended Indian partner in the Rafale fighter jet deal — a transaction that was itself a major domestic political controversy.
The correspondence. The files show Epstein and Ambani in regular contact between 2017 and 2019.
That window begins nine years after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for procuring a minor for prostitution, and continues until months before his arrest.
What they discussed. A range of matters, including:
- Sizing up incoming US ambassadors to India — Ambani’s own assessments of candidates.
- Arranging meetings for Modi with senior US officials.
- Business deals and government issues.
- Ehud Barak. Epstein wrote to Ambani: “in the email I sent you Ehud Baraks contact details.”
The tone. Reporting describes the correspondence as reflecting familiarity and, in places, sexualised and demeaning language regarding women.
The May 2019 meeting. Records show Ambani met Epstein in New York. Afterwards, Epstein told Steve Bannon he had met “Modi’s guy.”
Anil Ambani has not commented publicly on the files. He has not been charged with any offence, and no allegation connects him to Epstein’s crimes.
“Leadership.”
Not a named official. Not a ministry. A collective noun that implies authority without ever asserting it — and which cannot be checked, denied or attributed.
It is the single most efficient word available to someone claiming to speak for a government they may not speak for. If challenged, it means nothing. If unchallenged, it means everything.
Section 02
“Modi On Board”
The most complete documented sequence in the India file, and it runs three men deep.
Step one — the pitch. Ambani writes to Epstein about Modi’s 2019 election victory:
“He won with HUGE mandate. His guy said that no one in wash speaks to him however his main enemy is CHINA! And their proxy in the region pakistan. They will host the g20 in 22.. Totally buys into your vision.”
Step two — the offer. Epstein replies: “I think mr modi might enjoy meeting steve bannon, you all share the china problem.”
Step three — the assent. Ambani writes back a single word: “sure.”
Step four — the report. Epstein messages Steve Bannon: “modi on board.”
Read what happened there. A billionaire’s one-word reply to a convicted sex offender became, one message later, a report to a former White House chief strategist that the Prime Minister of India was on board.
What is not established. That Ambani was authorised to approve anything on the Indian government’s behalf. That Modi knew of the exchange. There is no public record of a meeting between Bannon and Indian officials that summer.
Why it matters anyway. Because at no point in that chain did anyone verify anything — and because the same Bannon channel appears in the Australian file, where Bannon claimed to Epstein that he had directed a $60 million election advertising campaign.
Ambani says “Leadership” wants something.
Epstein believes Ambani speaks for Modi.
Bannon believes Epstein speaks for Ambani.
Nobody checks with the Indian government.
This is the mechanism the entire site documents, compressed into four messages: each party assumes the previous one has verified, and none has.

Section 03
The Modi Claim
There is no public evidence of any direct engagement between Epstein and Narendra Modi. The references are Epstein’s own assertions in private correspondence, not records of contact. The Indian government has rejected them outright. This section documents a claim in order to weigh it, not to advance it.
The email. In correspondence with Sheikh Jabor Al Thani — the Qatari businessman and ruling family member documented on this site’s Middle East hub — Epstein wrote:
“The Indian Prime Minister Modi took his advice and danced and sang in Israel for the benefit of the US president. They had met a few weeks ago. It worked.”
The underlying fact. Modi did visit Israel in July 2017, becoming the first Indian prime minister to do so. That is public and uncontested.
Everything else is Epstein’s assertion — that he advised the visit, that Modi took his advice, and that the two had met.
The government response. On 31 January 2026, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that beyond the fact of the official visit, the rest were “little more than trashy ruminations by a convicted criminal” and should be dismissed “with the utmost contempt.”
The MEA added there is no evidence of any substantive interaction or advisory relationship between Modi and Epstein.
This site’s assessment. The denial is consistent with the documents. Nothing in the release contradicts it.
And the pattern supports it. Epstein systematically overstated his access — to Beijing, to the Kremlin, to Riyadh. Claiming credit to a Qatari businessman for the itinerary of an Indian prime minister is entirely characteristic, and characteristically unverifiable.
Note who the recipient was. The boast was made to a Gulf contact — which is what boasts are for. Sheikh Jabor is the same man he was advising during the Qatar blockade.
The Congress opposition made the sharpest point, and it does not depend on the claim being true.
Epstein asserted, to a foreign national, that he had advised the Prime Minister of India. Whether or not it was true, that assertion was circulating among foreign business and political figures — and the question of how such a claim became sayable is a legitimate one.
A false claim of access, believed abroad, is itself a form of influence.
Epstein told Reid Hoffman that Prince Andrew had spent significant time with Xi Jinping, and offered to broker Chinese access through him.
Epstein told a Qatari businessman that Modi took his advice on an Israel visit.
Both are claims made to third parties about a head of state he had no documented relationship with. In China the claim was the product. There is no reason to read India differently.

Section 04
Hardeep Singh Puri
The only serving Indian minister named. Hardeep Singh Puri retired from the Indian Foreign Service and joined Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014. He is currently Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas.
What the documents show. Email exchanges from June 2014 between Puri and Epstein, discussing Reid Hoffman’s visit to India.
The date is the point. June 2014 is the month after the BJP’s general election victory — the beginning of the Modi era — and six years after Epstein’s conviction.
Reid Hoffman again. The LinkedIn co-founder is the same figure to whom Epstein wrote in November 2015 claiming Prince Andrew’s access to Xi Jinping. Hoffman is the recurring American recipient of Epstein’s brokered-access offers across at least two countries.
Hoffman has publicly expressed regret over his contact with Epstein.
What is not established. That Puri did anything improper, that the visit produced anything, or that the relationship continued. The documented material is a 2014 exchange about arranging a technology executive’s trip.
Why it is included. Because Puri is a sitting cabinet minister who was, at the time, a senior political figure corresponding with a convicted sex offender — and because his “networking” efforts are cited in Indian reporting as part of the broader access picture.
Puri has not been charged, and no allegation of wrongdoing has been established against him.

Section 05
The Wider List
Other Indian and Indian-origin names appear in the archive, and this section exists mainly to say how little most of them amount to.
Named in reporting: businessman and investor Ravi Mantha; author and speaker Deepak Chopra; filmmakers Mira Nair and Anurag Kashyap; and actor Nandita Das.
How they appear. In fragments — emails, meeting logs, internal notes and conversations gathered during US investigations.
No allegation of wrongdoing has been established against any of them, and none is accused by any authority of anything.
The standard this site applies. Cultural figures who attended events, appeared on guest lists, or were mentioned by third parties are the largest category in the entire archive and the least informative. They are recorded here so that readers searching for the names find an accurate account rather than an insinuation.
The far more serious category. Newsreel Asia notes that a smaller set of India-related references concerns Epstein’s victims. This site does not detail those references, in line with its policy of not publishing material that could identify survivors.

Only the first category involves documented two-way contact. That distinction has been almost entirely lost in the coverage.
Section 06
The Domestic Fight
India’s response has been almost entirely political rather than investigative.
The government position — delivered within 24 hours of the release — was categorical dismissal: trashy ruminations, to be treated with contempt.
The opposition position. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh noted that the Prime Minister was mentioned several times across the released documents, and the party called for clarity.
Their argument, stated fairly: that Epstein’s claim — made in communication with a foreign national — that he had advised the Prime Minister calls for an explanation of how such a claim came to be made, since any suggestion of access to a head of government by someone with no official role raises questions about how decisions are taken.
The wider context Congress has invoked. The party has linked the files to the timing of a US–India trade deal signed on 3 February 2026, and to US court proceedings involving the Adani Group. This site takes no position on that argument, which is a contested domestic political claim rather than a documentary finding, and notes that no evidence connects the Epstein files to either matter.
What has not happened. No Indian investigation of any kind. No parliamentary inquiry. No agency has been asked to examine the Ambani correspondence.
The comparison. Norway charged three officials. France opened two criminal inquiries. Brazil opened a trafficking investigation. India issued a press statement.
The government is defending Modi. The opposition is attacking Modi. Neither is examining the thing that is actually documented.
A private citizen with no official role told a convicted sex offender that “Leadership” wanted introductions in Washington, and a chain of foreign actors acted on it as though it were authorised.
Whether that was authorised is a factual question with a knowable answer, and nobody in India has asked it.

Open Questions
The Modi claim is almost certainly worthless — an unverifiable boast by a man who systematically overstated his access, made to a Gulf businessman in another country. The Ambani correspondence is not worthless, and it is the thing nobody in India is examining.
A billionaire industrialist told a convicted sex offender that Delhi wanted things. Epstein believed him. Bannon believed Epstein. And at no point did anyone ask the Indian government whether it was true.
